CLIMBING COURSE

The aim of the climbing course is for you to learn enough to start climbing in the mountains without an instructor.

The first part of the course takes place in the charming small village of Lom. Here we practice climbing techniques, securing, and rope team procedures. We stay at a camping site. Lom has groceries, a bakery, outdoor shops, and even a real stave church.

The second part of the course takes place in the Jotunheimen mountains, in the area around Galdhøpiggen. Here, you will learn proper mountain climbing among beautiful climbing routes. Our most used mountains are Skeia (the spoon) and Little Galdhøpiggen.

On the last day of the course, those who wish to do so can try lead climbing under the supervision of an instructor.

Was on a high school glacier course with the golden boy Runar as a skilled instructor. Informative course that was adapted to the level the group had and what we wanted to work on more.

The course was amazing. It was above our expectations. We learned more than we expected and we did a lot of cool things. Especially the last two days were super cool. On friday we had great weather and climbed Kalven, which was an awesome hike. On Saterday we did soms ice climbing and rappeled down the most beautiful crevasse. We will remember this for a long time. This whole week was so awesome because of Runar. He's a great guy that loves the mountains and we felt save throughout the whole course. He was taking good care of us, knowing our limits and teaching us not only about the glaciers but also about the evironment

I had a great experience during the climbing course.Good, experienced and skilled instructors. The course offers opportunities that are not particularly available on a daily basis. Consider having an experienced climber "hang over your shoulder" while you set belays. The course site (Lom) provided an excellent opportunity to get to and from various tours and walls, as well as to buy things you needed in the center of Lom.It was nice to have a sink and toilet available at the campsite, but it would have worked just as well without it.The information sent out ahead of the course was complementary.

I am very satisfied with the course!Thought it was educational and covered relevant parts. I feel ready to go out in a rope team with people who have taken the equivalent course to get to the top.Runar was really good as an instructor, very committed, concerned about our safety and really decent!p.s. Being on the glacier feels a bit like being on another planet. 👍

We did the 3-day glacier course. Truly an amazing experience. We learned about walking on ice, on snow, navigating on a glacier, placing ice screws and about general gear management. We also practiced rescue techniques and did some ice climbing. The guide (Jonas) was very friendly and professional. Can certainly recommend!

We had a glacier course in Josterdalen with Marte and it was fantastic - our knowledgeable, patient and experienced guide taught us what a needed to know to navigate glaciers safely. We had a great time, learned a lot, in a beautiful place! (And we were lucky with the weather...!)

With no previous experience of rope climbing, I took part in a course run by Breoppleving in the summer of 2020. Based in Lom, we practiced theory and practice for 4 days together with two experienced instructors and finished the course with two summit trips. The first day of hiking went to Vesle Galdhøpiggen where we hiked up the glacier to the entrance and climbed four lengths of rope. On the second day of the tour, we summited Store Austanbottentind with a rope team and running belays. Two wonderful trips that are memories for life, where we got to practice what we had learned. The instructors were educational, patient and made all the participants (varying experience with rope climbing) feel safe in exposed but wonderful surroundings. Recommended for anyone who is new to climbing and summit climbing in alpine terrain!

Course plan

This detailed course plan shows the activities planned for each day. It is more flexible than it looks, and the course leader will adapt it according to participants, weather, and conditions in the mountains.

The meeting time is 7 pm (19:00) PM at Lom Camping.

After the presentation of the course outline, participants, and instructors, the instruction begins. We will introduce the climbing equipment, discuss its applications, and practice knots. We will then provide a theoretical overview of the stresses our bodies and equipment may face in the event of a fall, connecting this information with the proper use of the gear.

The entire day will be spent at the practice area near Tronoberget in Lom.

We begin by top-rope climbing to learn how to use the equipment and practice movement techniques and safety procedures. We will also practice rappelling.

The theory for today will cover the grading system and communication among climbers.

We will also remain at Tronoberget for this day. Today, we will learn about placing safety devices, building belay stations, climbing single-pitch routes, practicing rope team procedures, belay station routines, and communicating within the rope team.

The teaching for today will cover trip planning and alpine hazards.

In the afternoon, we may move to the mountains (Jotunheimen National Park) and establish a tent camp there. If the weather forecast is uncertain, we will stay at Lom Camping for the remainder of the course.

We are heading into the mountains to climb. The most likely routes are Vesle Galdhøpiggen (2369 meters above sea level) and Skeia (2118 meters above sea level).

Since weather and conditions determine route choices, we might choose another mountain sometimes.

Today’s theory will cover climbing history and ethics.

This day is dedicated to rock climbing.

We will practice basic buddy rescue techniques. Under the instructor’s guidance, participants will also have the opportunity to place protection while lead climbing.

Today’s teaching will cover organized rescue services and relevant climbing accident first-aid.

Now we are going to climb in the high mountains again.  Typically, it is either Skeia (2118 meters above sea level) or Vesle Galdhøpiggen (2369 meters above sea level).

However, it can also be another peak in Jotunheimen. The main aim of the day is to climb a long route with one or more belay stations so you can experience real mountain climbing.

This day is rather long.

Sunday has a short schedule: We pack up and head home.

For more detailed information about the course, such as packing list, maps, and other details, see our documents page.

Location

The course starts in Lom, the national park village of Jotunheimen, and continues inside Jotunheimen National Park.

The first part of the course takes place in Lom, the national park village of Jotunheimen. Here, we stay at a Lom Camping with access to showers and common areas.

Lom is a small village known for its excellent food, and the Bakery in Lom is fantastic. In addition, there is a stave church, a mountain museum, groceries, and shops selling climbing equipment.

The climbing field is called Tronoberget and is located just across the river. Lom is one of the driest places in Norway, so the climbing conditions usually is excellent.

The second part of the course takes place in Jotunheimen, usually near Galdhøpiggen and at Smørstabbtindane.

In the area around Galdhøpiggen, there are some fantastic routes high in the mountains, such as Vesle Galdhøpiggen (2369 meters above sea level). Smørstabbtindane features Skeia (2118 meters above sea level), one of the most beautiful climbing routes in Jotunheimen.

Jotunheimen means “home of the giants” and is the area with Norway’s highest mountains. There are many routes which can be climbed, and at all levels. As it is with high mountains, the weather shifts from warm sunny days to the rare summer snowfall.

Physical demands

Good physical fitness is needed to handle the longer days in the mountain. Most participants have some indoor climbing experience, but it is also fine to join without prior climbing experience. If you already have some knowledge, we will adjust the course so that you can learn more.
